Sensei Modena 2016

On the 21st of September, Sensei arrived Wednesday evening, at 10:10 pm at Bologna Airport. Waiting for Him there were 3 persons: Fabio Luppi, the host, Alice, his daughter and Alessandro Tittarelli.
In one hour and half we got to Serramazzoni (MO), a nice Town, 800 meters height in the Apennines Modenese.
We checked in at “Scuola Alberghiera e di Ristorazione di Serramazzoni”(http://www.srsr.it ), school famous throughout Italy for the excellent training of personnel Hospitality: Food and first class service.

22 September 2016:
Thursday morning, Fabio Luppi, Sensei and Alessandro Tittarelli, visited a big shopping center of Modena, the Grand Emilia (http://www.grandemilia.it/ita/negozi/) where Sensei was able to see and even buy some local specialties. Lunch was at the Serramazzoni School. After lunch we relaxed, walked through the village and visit the Municipal Gym where the preparation for the koshukai [placing of the Tatami and the “Shomen”] was taking place. At around 6 pm teachers from Switzerland and Germany joined the group and we went for dinner at a local restaurant (Antica Trattoria Cacciatori)to eat venison (tortellini in broth, pappardelle, deer, wild boar etc … ).

23 September 2016
On Friday morning after breakfast the group went to visit a farm about 20 kilometers from Serramazzoni, in the land of Pavullo nel Frignano, where the owners (former students of hotel school) have built the ‘Agriturismo Casa Minelli (http://www.agriturismocasaminelli.it). Here Sensei, himself a farmer too, could see how the local Bio flour of ancient grains is produced also and especially how to produce balsamic vinegar older than 50 years.
Lunch was at the School in Serramazzoni.
We were ready for the koshukai!

About 100 people joined the koshukai and they came from the USA, UK, France, Macedonia, Romania, Germany, Switzerland, Iran, Slovakia and Italy. Some important teachers also attended the koshukai such as Alessandro Tittarelli, (8th Dan), Alberto Boglio (6th Dan), Stephan Kurilla (6th Dan) and Akimasa Watanabe (6th Dan).
The training was fantastic and everybody simply loved it: Tachi Dori, Tanken Dori, Taijutsu (Kote Gaeshi, Irimi Nage…), Jo Dori, Jo Kata, Kumi Jo, Kumi Tachi and Kumi Tachi no Henka. The “Special Keiko” was on Nikyo and Sankyo Henka but also Kaeshi Waza from Nikyo (Sankyo and Ago Oshi) and Shiho Nage (Sutemi Waza).
A lot to study now that we are back home!!!

At the end of the koshukai, Francesca, Tittarelli sensei’s daughter, who is like a member of the Saito family, visited Sensei with her son Melquiades and husband Alain. Danilo di Teodoro, an old timer from Italy was with them. It was a wonderful family reunion during lunch time, on Sunday.
Sensei departed on monday morning back to Japan, where he arrived safely.

Sensei,
thank you very much for Your patience and teaching! It was a superb koshukai!

Thanks so much for the organization, the host Fabio Luppi with his students, and to Tittarelli shihan who is always on the back of every koshukai making it run smoothly.

We were honored to receive Mitsuyoshi Saito Sensei in Brazil for his first international seminar.

He arrived in São Paulo International Airport on March 29th 2016, a Wednesday, morning with Tristão da Cunha Shihan, who was kind enough to accept our invitation to come and help us receiving Mitsuyoshi Sensei.

We stayed on an apartment near Av. Paulista, a well-known post-card in São Paulo, together with Mario Silva Shihan and José Silva from Uruguay. My wife Ana was also with us all the time taking pictures.

After a small rest, we went out to visit “Liberdade”, São Paulo city’s Japanese Town and we had a traditional Feijoada for lunch.

At night we had Dinner on a restaurant with traditional food from Minas Gerais’ State and had a few Caipirinhas!

On Thursday, March 31st, we walked through Av. Paulista and had lunch on a Brazilian Steakhouse, and then we went to rest and prepare for a small Iwama Shin Shin EMBU at the Japanese Pavilion, supported by São Paulo’s Bunkyo Kai. It was a very special evening. It was such an honor to host an EMBU with Mitsuyoshi Sensei, Tristão da Cunha Shihan, Mario Silva Shihan, José Silva and Brazilian Deshi on Morihiro Saito Sensei’s 88th birthday on this traditional Japanese place.

On the next morning we went to Ribeirão Preto for the Seminar! The town is located on the heart of São Paulo State and 320km far from it’s capital. Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shuren Kai Brazil’s Hombu Dojo is located there. It was a pleasant drive.

We arrived on the Summer Chalet and as it was very hot we relaxed a little on the swimming pool before the Seminar.

Mitsuyoshi Saito’s First International Seminar started on the evening of April 1st, 2016. We had 8 keikos of 1h15 until Sunday morning. Almost 50 people attended, from Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Portugal, and Uruguay. Also deshi from the 4 Brazilian Dojos were there. There were students from other schools as well, such as Shimbu-kan (Aikikai Ribeirão Preto) and Takemusu Aikido Kai.

We were all amazed by Mitsuyoshi Sensei’s technique, power and teachings. Everybody felt that Mitsuyoshi Sensei was explaining at their own aikido level. What happened is that he taught a very basic seminar only with kihon techniques, so the beginners were able to understand. Yet the level of details was so high that even the most graduated masters found it very interesting.

indonesia 2016 1

This is Saito Sensei’s 2nd Koshukai held in Indonesia (the first one was held in 2013) and we certainly looking forward for more opportunity to practice with Saito Sensei in the future.
The event commenced with solemn ritual for the Kami, O’Sensei, and Morihiro Saito Sensei. It was then continued with brief explanation of Aikido basic stance, stages of waza, and a brief history behind the traditional teaching practiced in Iwama Shinshin Aiki Shurenkai.

1st Day Keiko (Session 1 and 2).

indonesia 2016 2
Sensei’s constant emphasize on Kihon Waza marks our 1st day keiko. Staple techniques such as Tai No Henko, Morotetori Kokyunage and Shomenuchi Ikkyo marks the initiation of the highly anticipated event. Sensei gave clear explaination the importance of exploring kihon waza and the connection with advanced waza also with buki waza.

indonesia 2016 3

The keiko was then continued with invigorating 2 version of Roku no Jo Kata: Choku Tsuki and Kaeshi Tsuki, Followed with an Introduction and step by step explanations of Kumi Jo 1 and 2.

indonesia 2016 4

2nd Day Keiko (Session 3 and 4)

indonesia 2016 5

We started the 2nd day practicing sword basic techniques, such as Suburi, Zengogiri, Shihogiri and followed with brief introduction of kumitachi 1 and 2 and various taijutsu. All accompanied with loud yet vigorous Kiai.

indonesia 2016 7

The key message during of the entire event is to always be aware of one’s state of mind by implementing Zanshin during keiko-time and necessity of continuous repetitive practice of kihon. Only through this awareness can one achieve self-improvement in their Aikido journey.

We would like to say thank you to Sensei for his wonderful teaching.

Thank you Sensei, Arigatou Sensei!
